An organization's basic resources are the 4 Ms (and their associated departments) , which meet the requirements of the organization's market:

 
 

We could consider Marketing to be the "5 th M." Strictly speaking, the 4 Ms are really factors of production, and Marketing is an external factor or goal.

Please note that the 4 Ms apply to organizations engaged in manufacturing or producing material goods, and may not be appropriate for those engaged in services, such as advertising or law
)

The people who work in an organization - its human resources - can also be categorized based on responsibility: those who are directly responsible vs. those with a supportive function (line vs. staff, administrative vs. operations).
