Readings

We will use Chemical Principles, 5th Edition, by Atkins and Jones (Freeman Press) as our text material in this course. You can get this book through the UCI bookstore or through online book stores. The Chapters 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 will be discussed this Quarter.

Assignments

The only way to truly master chemistry is to work through lots of practice problems. There will mandatory online homework for each segment of this course that will count toward your final grade - for that reason, you must register for the Sapling Learning electronic homework . This interactive program gives you more guided practice with the topics from lecture and allows us to include explanations and hints with the problems to help you learn from your mistakes and master the problems. It also allows both you as the student and us as the instructors to monitor your understanding and progress and make sure you are keeping up with the material.

When you register for this class, an account will be created for you for the online homework. However, your account needs to be activated. During the first week of class, you will receive an e-mail from Sapling Learning with detailed instructions about how to activate your account and how to access the homework for this class. Note that there is a $19.99 fee associated with activating your account.

If you enroll late in this class, please send the instructor an e-mail about enrolling for the online homework. Do not attempt to register yourself before receiving instructions from the instructor.
